Skateboarder Eric Costello Casts A Long Shadow (ScottsValley)
www.hiway17.com - December 28, 2005 - Los Gatos By Jondi Gumz (Santa Cruz Sentinel)
SCOTTSVALLEY — When skateboard pro Eric Costello died in a tragic accident in October at 35, he left behind scores of teens grateful they had known him. Like Grady Brannan. Grady, 14, knew Costello for only a year. "He taught me everything I know," said Grady, whose favorite hangout is the ScottsValleySkatepark. When Grady's skateboard got worn down, Costello gave him one, then another, and yet another — equipment worth hundreds of dollars. "If he couldn't give you something, he'd sell it to you for a quarter of the price," Grady said.
In exchange, Grady helped out at Costello's skateboard lessons, taking youngsters aside so Costello could spend time with students one-on-one. Ever since Costello died, Grady has always worn a helmet while skateboarding — to honor Costello. "That's what all of my friends did," Grady said.
Because he was a role model and mentor to so many young skateboarders, Eric Costello is one of the Sentinel Newsmakers of 2005. Costello emphasized the importance of safety to his students, so his death was ironic. He was demonstrating a move at the skatepark and fell. His head injury was fatal because his helmet, which was not securely fastened, flew off.
The tragedy brought the community together three times, at a standing-room only memorial for Costello, then at an exhibition by pro skateboarder Tony Hawk to benefit Costello's 14-year-old son Taylor who tragically witnessed his father's accident, and finally at a "Helmets for Life" event for local kids.
