On May 14, local mountain residents gathered at the Summit Center for a chance to watch the Santa Cruz stage of the Amgen Tour along Summit Road. Darrel and Karen Osborn, owners of the Summit Store, made a party out of it by parking their RV at the entrance to the lot and setting up their barbeque. They enjoyed the perfect spring day while listening to Jimmy Buffet tunes, surrounded by family, friends, customers and passersby. Son-in-law Ben Abeln barbecued hot dogs, burgers and ribs. He also cooked a batch of deep fried alligator meat.
Ben’s wife Lindsay helped out while caring for son Mason, 9-months-old. Before the cyclists appeared, a stream of CHP cars and motorcycles cruised past the store with flashing lights, and sirens wailing in order to clear the road of any stray motorists or bicyclists. A group of fans sat waiting in beach chairs at the corner of Summit and the San Jose-Soquel Road and a loud cheer went up as the cyclists sped by.
